{"id":1909,"date":"2010-12-11T23:48:17","date_gmt":"2010-12-12T07:48:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mathpirate.net\/log\/?p=1909"},"modified":"2010-12-11T23:48:17","modified_gmt":"2010-12-12T07:48:17","slug":"summarizing-android","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mathpirate.net\/log\/2010\/12\/11\/summarizing-android\/","title":{"rendered":"Summarizing Android"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So far, my experience with Android has been brief moments of totally awesome brilliance, separated by vast swaths of WTF.<\/p>\n<p>For example, why is it easier to get a speech synthesizer integrated into my application than it is to get a context menu set up?\u00c2\u00a0 Why is the debugger so introverted that it refuses to\u00c2\u00a0tell me what&#8217;s wrong?\u00c2\u00a0 W&#8230;h&#8230;y&#8230; &#8230;i&#8230;s&#8230; &#8230;i&#8230;t&#8230; &#8230;s&#8230;o&#8230; &#8230;s&#8230;l&#8230;o&#8230;w&#8230; &#8230;t&#8230;o&#8230; &#8230;t&#8230;y&#8230;p&#8230;e&#8230; &#8230;a&#8230;n&#8230;y&#8230;t&#8230;h&#8230;i&#8230;n&#8230;g&#8230; &#8230;i&#8230;n&#8230; &#8230;t&#8230;h&#8230;e&#8230; &#8230;e&#8230;m&#8230;u&#8230;l&#8230;a&#8230;t&#8230;o&#8230;r&#8230;?&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I understand that writing a single application meant to run on multiple different highly contstrained environments is complicated.\u00c2\u00a0 I understand that defining a View in XML and interacting with compiled code classes is complicated.<\/p>\n<p>But Microsoft&#8217;s done it and has done it for years.\u00c2\u00a0 I set some things in a XAML file and it&#8217;s just there in the class.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have to use a\u00c2\u00a0TextBox Resource ID to look up an element I need to work with. \u00c2\u00a0And I doubt they&#8217;re the first or the only that can do it.\u00c2\u00a0 Why can&#8217;t the flagship open source IDE figure that out?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m hoping that I&#8217;m just missing something.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever.\u00c2\u00a0 At least it&#8217;s still not Objective C.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So far, my experience with Android has been brief moments of totally awesome brilliance, separated by vast swaths of WTF.
